Hypnosis for Healing the Immune System

Have you struggled with chronic illnesses, a suppressed immune system, or strange symptoms that frustrate you and baffle doctors? Do you find that your physical symptoms, or your worry about health problems makes it so you can’t sleep? Or maybe you are looking for a way to boost the nervous system naturally?

It can be extremely frustrating to be motivated in your life and feel like your body is breaking down. One of the reasons that I, Dr. Dyan, feel such passion for empowering people to heal the body naturally and using hypnosis for healing sleep, immune issues, pain, anxiety, and associated depression is because I suffered so deeply with many of those issues myself, from a very young age. Do you feel as helpless and overwhelmed and heartbroken as I did?

While working with patients in the medical office (for 20 years) of a prominent holistic Internist and Immunologist physician, I gained a practical understanding of the immune system. I got trained in hypnosis in 1995 and started doing self-hypnosis for sleep and immune issues at that point. My symptoms and lab results showed such dramatic improvements that the doctor asked me to create the best hypnosis audios for sleep, immune, allergy, and other symptoms, that I could for individual patients in that medical practice. You can read more about my story and what happened here.

The following topics will be covered on this page. Feel free to click on the lines below to read more!

How Does Trauma Affect the Body & How Does Trauma Affect the Immune System?

Can the Mind Influence the Body?

Yes! The way we think, and the things we think about, impact how we move, how our bodies react, even our blood pressure, sports performance, and so many aspects of health.

One of the most important and empowering things that we can do is actually remarkably simple: Shifting where and how you direct your attention can put your immune and nervous systems at risk OR can boost and strengthen them.

The mind, body, and spirit connect at all times. They each have a language that longs to be in harmony with one another. The mind speaks with words. The body speaks with symptoms. The unconscious speaks with symbols and metaphors. When we use hypnosis stories to focus our words into meaningful, directed metaphors, we can create self-hypnosis for healing sleep, improving immune function, and supporting overall wellness.

For decades, research has been showing that individuals who practice self-hypnosis maintain a better immune response while under stress than those who don’t. Additionally, the more people practice self-hypnosis, the stronger their immune systems in helping them to fight off illness.

Additionally, in a literature review, the findings showed,

“…the comparison of self-hypnosis with and without immune imagery confirmed advantages to targeted imagery for both immune function and mood, and importantly, fewer winter viral infections. The implications for health were investigated in a third study in patients with virulent and chronic herpes simplex virus-2 HSV-2). Six weeks of training almost halved recurrence, improved mood and reduced levels of clinical depression and anxiety. Immune functions were up-regulated, notably functional natural killer cell activity…”

In my own work with patients over the decades, I’ve seen remarkable things in terms of incredible improvements in the way that people feel and also in terms of medical testing. The most powerful way to approach a mind-body problem, in my opinion, comes when we support the body medically AND support the mind using a strategy like self-hypnosis.

How the Best Sleep Hypnosis Audios Support Immune Health

Great sleep boosts the immune system. Poor quality or not enough sleep lowers the immune system. Research demonstrates that when we don’t get enough good sleep, the risk for everything from common colds to cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and stroke increases. Additionally, lack of sleep makes recovery from even common viruses take longer.

Dr. Eric J. Olson, M.D, reports for the Mayo Clinic:

how sleep affects the immune system through cytokines

When we don’t get enough sleep, our bodies are more vulnerable and also have a harder time recovering.
I’ve seen the incredible frustration of so many people who have downloaded sleep meditations, used apps, or watched “the best sleep YouTube videos” only to find that these might be relaxing but have not helped them to get the sleep they needed.
Years ago, when I started listening to those meditations and hypnosis’s myself, I found that they tend to be very basic. Surprisingly, the ones I’ve heard generally do not seem to incorporate core components of sleep architecture. They do not tap into the language of the unconscious. And they do not layer in safe and effective suggestions for how people can learn, at a deep level, how to support their immune, nervous, and sleep systems. This drove me to create the best sleep self-hypnosis audios that teach people self-hypnosis for their own self-care while they rest, take a break, or drift off.

How Does Trauma Affect the Body & How Does Trauma Affect the Immune System?

Trauma impacts the nervous system, the immune system, and increases inflammation.

how trauma affects the immune system

When the nervous system gets activated, it looks for a way to “discharge” that activation through the fight, flight, and freeze response. You may be able to think of small and big examples of feeling threatened and wanting to scream, run, fight, or feeling like you can’t.

Once you eventually get away from the threat or extinguish it, ideally your system feels safety and relief and gets back into the equilibrium. Except sometimes it doesn’t get back into equilibrium.

Unfortunately, many people experience chronic or overwhelming stress, threat, or trauma. When that happens, the nervous system stays on high alert. Sometimes, even when “life goes on” as “normal,” the nervous system continues to hold onto the trauma, the stress, the feeling of threat, or the unresolved memories. Those memories might be “body memories” or just memories held by the body.

This type of chronic stress and trauma takes a toll on the immune system.

Sixty-five studies were analyzed and they found that,

“…it has been demonstrated that traumatic stress disorder and immune disease share a common genetic basis at the gene expression level.”

When dealing with trauma, and especially with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD and Chronic PTSD), I recommend Somatic Experiencing, the trauma resiliency model of Dr. Peter Levine, Ph.D.

In 2017, I completed my three year certification training as a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner® (SEP)  and have worked extensively in master classes and presenting my own demo subjects to Dr. Levine since that time. This special training highlights how the body can “hold” trauma and how the nervous system processes the fight, flight, and freeze responses. This somatic experiencing technique safely and effectively facilitates the release of those body responses without re-traumatizing the person. Once the nervous system has released the held trauma responses, the immune system can also recover and become more resilient.

I have found that somatic experiencing techniques can greatly enhance comfort, calm, empowerment, and quality of life. This is especially true when used alongside psychotherapeutic approaches, hypnotherapy for immune function support, and with regular use of the best sleep self-hypnosis audio downloads for immune symptoms that I design for each individual. For PTSD or those with severe trauma symptoms, I strongly recommend one-on-one meetings with a certified SEP trauma therapist in your area. You can find those resources here.

Lastly, in an effort to help the mind encourage healing within the body, there are two paths for using self-hypnosis for healing the immune system:

  • The sleep hypnosis audios that are part of the 9 Weeks to Sound Sleep Self-Hypnosis System can be accessed through three different packages. To find out the right package for you, take this questionnaire. Remember: high quality sleep remains a crucial part of healthy immune functioning. Additionally, these self-hypnosis audios and accompanying materials are tools that teach you these self-care strategies to support your health while you are resting.
  • In individual one-on-one hypnosis sessions, I regularly create self-hypnosis recordings for immune system support for clients with allergies, asthma, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, lyme disease, MS, lupus, candida, self-hypnosis for cancer treatment support, and more.
